Dr. Brad Patt has been chairman of Theracell since it’s inception in 2008 and has served as CEO of the Company since April 2012.



Brad has over 30 years experience as an entrepreneur and executive manager with a strong background in operations, finance, regulatory affairs and R&D of sophisticated leading-edge medical technology products. He has led several enterprises from start-up phase through rapid growth and has experience in executive team development, project management, human resource development, intellectual property as well as interfacing with investors, shareholders, advisors, customers, and commercial, industrial, academic, regulatory, and governmental partners.



Brad founded several high tech ventures since 1997. He previously was co-founder, CEO and Chairman of Gamma Medica, Inc. Brad built Gamma to market leadership position in pre-­clinical CT, PET, SPECT imaging and is inventor and developer of Molecular Breast Imaging for detecting otherwise occult breast cancer in dense ­breasted women.



Brad is also co-­founder and Director of EVO Worldwide, Inc. an advanced medical diagnostic imaging systems company; DxRay, Inc. an advanced digital x­-ray detection company; Photon Imaging, Inc. a technology incubator; and Radiant Detector Technologies, Inc., sold to Seiko of Japan in 2005 now operating as Hitachi High Technology, USA, Inc. Brad also founded and is a Director of Thrive Outside the Box, a nonprofit organization that identifies and develops areas of talent in individuals on the autistic spectrum.



Brad is an internationally recognized authority in the field of medical imaging with over one hundred scientific papers and presentations, several book chapters, and 17 patents. He has been an invited speaker at several international conferences. He has held elected positions on the IEEE Nuclear Medicine Instrumentation Steering Committee (NMISC) and the IEEE Radiation Instrumentation Steering Committee (RISC), and was appointed to the Program Committee of the SPIE Medical applications of Penetrating Radiation, acting as Chairman of the Penetrating Radiation Work Group for 2003 and 2004. Dr. Patt is a consultant to the National Institutes of Health and the recipient of over $15 million dollars of grant awards as Principal Investigator from the National Institutes of Health, The United States Department of Energy and NASA.

Dr. Andy Carter has worked with TheraCell as Chief Technology Officer since March 2011.



Andy is a world renowned expert in orthobiologics, orthopaedics, and biomaterials with more than 30 US patents and patent applications. Formerly: CTO at Anika Therapeutics (Nasdaq: ANIK);VP and General Manager at Spine Wave; 20 years at Smith and Nephew including Head of Materials Research, Program Manager, Orthopaedics and Group Director R&D at Smith and Nephew Endoscopy.

Nelson is an expert in the bone graft field who has extensive experience in orthopedic research, product development and tissue banking. He has over 30 issued US patents, numerous publications in spine and orthopedic journals and presentations at various societies.



Nelson began working with TheraCell in 2013 and has contributed his creativity, knowledge and expertise to conceive and develop several of our new products and road map. His name recognition, experience and scientific acumen make him a key asset for TheraCell.



Previously Nelson was Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedics and Director of the University of Florida Tissue Bank from 1987-1992 where he developed a deep understanding of tissue processing and bone biology. In 1993 he joined Osteotech, Inc. (now Medtronic) where his research on bone grafting led to the development of Grafton® Putty, Flex, Crunch and Matrix bone grafts. These products remain market leaders based on extensive research demonstrating their performance.



From 2001-2006 Nelson developed minimally invasive interventional and diagnostic spine products for Smith & Nephew, then was responsible for the development of the Progenix® bone grafts for Medtronic from 2006-2008.



Prior to joining Theracell in 2013 Nelson returned to Boston as the VP R&D Sports Surgery for Covidien.

Dr. Frank Phillips is a partner at Midwest Orthopaedics and is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Spine Fellowship Co-Director and Head, Section of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at Rush University Medical Center.

Dr. Phillips has pioneered numerous minimally invasive spine procedures and techniques that are now widely used and has published extensively in this field. He has over 15 patents in this space and has authored more than 150 peer reviewed publications and book chapters. He has participated as principal investigator in cervical disc replacement FDA trials.

Dr. Phillips has held numerous leadership positions and is currently a Board Member and North American President of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS) and is also Program Chair for the SASS Annual Meeting. He regularly teaches and lectures to spine surgeons nationally and internationally on spinal surgery.



Dr. Phillips served on BODs of Kyphon (acquired by Medtronic in 2007 for $4 billion) and on the Boards of other privately and publicly held spinal companies. He has also participated as a founder in a number of successful spine start-ups.

Joseph Miller has been a Managing Director at Europlay Capital Advisors, LLC and its subsidiaries (“ECA”) since 2003.



ECA is a Los Angeles-based boutique merchant bank and financial advisory firm that invests in, and provides services to companies in the technology, media, telecom, life sciences and consumer sectors. ECA’s clients and investments include such notable companies as Skype, Rdio, FlashFunders, FanDuel, and Red Bull Global Rallycross.



Joseph currently serves on the boards of several companies including Covata (ASX: CVT), Manalto, FlashFunders and Red Bull Global Rallycross. In the past, he has also served on the boards of Talon International, Multigig, and Unicorn Media as well as on the Compensation and Audit Committees of Skype Global prior to its sale to Microsoft.



Previously, Joseph was a Senior Vice President at Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin (“HLHZ”), a leading middle-market investment bank, where he was focused on transactions in the Entertainment and Media group, and serviced such clients as Warner Bros., Chrysalis, EMI Group and DreamWorks amongst many others. Prior to that, Mr. Miller was the Vice President – Corporate Development for Alliance Communications Corporation (“Alliance”). Alliance was then Canada's leading independent broadcaster, producer and distributor of filmed entertainment. During his tenure at Alliance, he was involved in several high profile transactions, including its US-based listing on NASDAQ, as well as several acquisitions.



Joseph has a bachelor's degree in Economics/Business from UCLA and holds Series 24, Series 7 and Series 63 securities licenses.

Jan Iwanczyk is a board member and a co-founder of Theracell, Inc. He is also a co-founder and CEO of DxRay Inc., Chairman & President of Photon Imaging, Inc., co-founder of Radiant Detector Technologies, Gamma Medica, Inc. and EVO Worldwide, Inc.

Dr. Iwanczyk was awarded the 2002 Merit Award from the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society for his contributions to the field of x-ray detection. He has published over 150 scientific papers, several book chapters and holds over 20 US patents.



Dr. Iwanczyk received his Doctorate in Physics from the Electronics Institute of Nuclear Research in Swierk, Poland and his B.S. and M.S. in Electronics from Warsaw Technical University in Warsaw, Poland.

Dr. Gunnar Andersson is The Ronald L. DeWald, M.D. Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center and a Spine, Back & Neck Surgeon at Midwest Orthopedics at Rush in Chicago, IL. He was chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 1994 to 2008.

Dr. Andersson has been at the forefront of spine surgery research and education for more than 30 years. He is a member of 17 editorial boards, editor-in-chief of Spinal News International, a deputy editor for Spine, founding editor of Contemporary Spine Surgery and an associate editor of Clinical Biomechanics. He is the author of over 330 original publications, over 160 books and book chapters and over 530 abstracts.

Dr. Andersson is a past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians and is currently President of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.

Dr. Andersson’s activities in connection with commercial companies includes previously being a member of scientific advisory boards at Zimmer, Smith and Nephew, Oratec, Pioneer, Angstrom, St Francis, and Bioset. He is currently on the scientific advisory boards at Allosource, Ouroboros, and Spinal Kinetics, and is a member of the safety monitoring boards at Spinal Kinetics and ISTO. Dr. Andersson is also on the Spine Advisory board to United Healthcare.

Stephen Hochschuler, MD, is Co-founder of the Texas Back Institute (TBI), one of the most academic private spine practices in the United States. He is an innovator in merging science, medicine and business, and TBI has been very active in innovative research and surgeon training.



Dr. Hochschuler graduated from Columbia College and earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School where he completed a two-year general surgery residency. He then completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He is active in publishing and lecturing at many international conferences. He is a founding member and past President of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS).



He serves as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board at Alphatec Spine, Inc. and is on the Board of Directors of Arizona Technology Enterprises – the intellectual property management and technology transfer organization for Arizona State University. He is on the Scientific Advisory Boards and Business Advisory Boards of several other spinal technology companies and serves as Manager for two venture funds.

Dr. Neel Anand serves as Clinical Professor of Surgery and Director of Spine Trauma at the renowned Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Over the course of more than 20 years in practice, Dr. Anand has channeled his orthopedic surgery expertise into a career exclusively dedicated to minimally invasive and innovative approaches to the treatment of spinal disorders especially scoliosis in adults and adolescents.



Dr. Anand is deeply committed to advancing the field of minimally invasive spine surgery and devotes a considerable amount of time to researching emerging technologies. He has served as principal investigator in a number of FDA investigational device exemption studies that have helped pave the way for innovation in minimally invasive spine surgery.



Dr. Anand is a heavily-published author, editor and presenter of articles, studies and poster/abstract presentations in prestigious academic journals, trade publications, textbook chapters and world-wide industry meetings with more than 500 such contributions to Spine, Journal of Spinal Disorders, Journal of Orthopedic Trauma and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, among many others.



Dr. Anand earned his medical degree from the University of Bombay, Topiwala National Medical College in India. He completed orthopedic residencies at the University of Bombay, the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London, the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Liverpool and at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Orthopedic Program at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York. Dr. Anand accomplished a reconstructive spinal surgery fellowship at the University of Florida Spinal Health Centers in Gainesville as well as a scoliosis fellowship and spinal trauma fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell University in New York. He completed his surgical internship at New York Medical College, Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center.

Dr. Nima Gharavi, MD. Ph.D., is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a member of the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS). 



Dr. Gharavi is a summa cum laude graduate of UCLA in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology with a specialization in Business and Administration, and received both his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA (Medical Scientist Training Program). Dr. Gharavi completed his internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, residency in dermatology at UCLA, and fellowship in procedural dermatology/Mohs micrographic surgery at UCLA. He is currently director of Mohs micrographic surgery for the Department of Dermatology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.



Dr. Gharavi is the recipient of numerous awards including UCLA’s Senior of the Year Award, the Edith and Carl Lasky award for the best research performed by a UCLA medical student, the Irvin H. Page Young Investigator Award, and the Theodore Tromovitch award (Mohs College meeting). He has been the recipient of grants from the American Heart Association (AHA), and the National Psoriasis Foundation amongst others. Dr. Gharavi’s research interests include many disease processes, including the pathogenesis of psoriasis, and the genetic profiles of high-risk squamous cell carcinoma. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts and textbook chapters, and continues to present and teach at national and international conferences.

Dr. Yuan is currently Professor Emeritus, Department of Orthopaedic and Neurological Surgery, SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse, where he has been on the faculty since 1974.



Dr. Yuan is an internationally acclaimed spine surgeon, researcher and thought leader with over 100 journal articles and book chapters and leadership positions at major societies and journals.



He has received numerous awards for scientific and leadership contributions including the Spine Arthroplasty Society Leon Wiltse Award, North American Spine Society Leadership and David Selby Award, International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine Volvo Award for Low Back Research and numerous other prestigious recognitions.



Dr. Yuan is a luminary in the spine surgery field and is highly sought by companies for his vision and leadership. Dr. Yuan is a Board Member of Nuvasive, and a Scientific Advisory Board Member of Kyphon, Archus Orthopedic, amongst others.



Dr. Yuan is a Past President of NASS and the Spine Arthroplasty Society and a member of many professional societies including AAOS, ISSLS, NASS, SRS, and SAS.

Dr. McAfee has been the Chief of Spinal Surgery with a joint appointment in Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery at University of Maryland St Josephs Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland for the past 20 years. He performs an average of 400 spinal reconstructive surgery procedures annually and runs a teaching Fellowship program, a spinal research laboratory, and manages the spine section of a 500-bed hospital. He has written over 190 peer reviewed publications, 6 full-length textbooks and surgical atlases. He has over 20 US Patents on spinal devices. The main fields of invention are 1) minimally invasive surgery and 2) motion preservation through elastic rods and/or replacement of the intervertebral disks. Dr. McAfee is the inventor of the Porous Coated Motion (PCM) cervical disk replacement (neck surgical procedure).



Among Dr. McAfee’s clinical research accomplishments is the completion of a full prospective randomized US FDA Phase III clinical trial ENROLLMENT from 20 different university medical centers involving over 80 surgeon investigators during the last six years. The Nuvasive PCM has been used in over 6000 patients worldwide in over 37 countries.



Over the last 5 years Dr. McAfee has been serving on the Medical Advisory Boards of over 15 companies (JNJ, Nuvasive, Medtronic, Globus Medical, Breakaway Imaging, Pioneer, TheraCell, Abbott Pharmaceuticals, Bonovo, Beijing Orthopedics International etc.). He has completed the Executive MBA program at Fordham University in NYC, graduating at the top of his class. He was granted entrance into these prestigious MBA elite academic societies-- Beta Gamma Sigma MBA Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Nu MBA Jesuit MBA Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi Business Management Honor Society.

Dr. Marshall is a practicing veterinarian in Stow, Massachusetts. Dr. Marshall has broad experience with small and large animal veterinary care and within the USDA in addressing communicable animal diseases.



Dr. Marshall previously was the practicing Owner and Medical Director of Westford Veterinary Clinic for small animals. He also has focused his practice more recently on equine care.



Mike previously served as a Veterinary Medical Officer for USDA where he was involved in policies and practice to curb the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in the United Kingdom. He also helped lead the response to the outbreak of velogenic Newcastle Disease in California.



As independent Medical Director for TheraCell-VET Dr. Marshall provides independent oversight of the safety and efficacy of our veterinary products.



Dr. Marshall graduated from University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine.

Ryan Azlein is a Partner with Stubbs, Alderton & Markiles. Ryan advises a wide range of both private and public clients, focusing on emerging growth, development stage and middle-market companies as well as the venture capital firms, angel investors and strategic investors that invest in these types of companies.



Ryan’s practice concentrates on venture capital and corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, equity and executive compensation matters, intellectual property development and licensing arrangements, SEC reporting and disclosure, public and private securities offerings, complex partnering arrangements, and general corporate matters.



Ryan is actively involved in the Southern California emerging company and venture capital community. In addition to managing the Preccelerator Program, Ryan regularly lectures to entrepreneurs, peer groups and students on various topics, including venture capital financing and issued faced by emerging growth companies.



Ryan received his B.A., with Honors, from the University of San Diego in 1996 and his J.D. in 1999 from the Berkeley Law, University of California at Berkeley. Ryan is admitted to practice law in the State of California.
